The 2018/19 National Service Personnel (NSP) of CalBank with support from Virtual Africa Group, have given the Accra Psychiatric Hospital (APH) a ¢97,000 makeover.

The kind gesture is funded from their monthly contributions which was deducted at source from their monthly allowances during their one-year service.

Cartherine Nueki Djangmah, president of the group said the bank as part of its culture of giving bank to society has instituted a scheme for NSP where they deduct at source and help them embark on a project.

Over the years, Service Personnel have built classroom projects for communities and donated to orphanages and maternal units among other things.

Explaining their motivation for renovating the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Ms Nueki Djangmah said a lot of factors contributed to it.

“Over the past few years, the NSS projects of the bank has been building projects where the group builds but the benefactors are not able to furnish the structure.

“We didn’t want to follow the trend so we rather went for an already built structure, that urgently needs help and refurbish it,” she said.

Speaking at a short ceremony to hand over the facility to the Deputy Director of the Hospital, Julius Kuusaalesuo, on Wednesday, she said her group made up of 136 personnel thought APH has been neglected for long by society and government.

“We thought they deserved more than they are getting considering some are there for no fault of their and also because of the stigmatized we have all abandoned them.

“Our group wanted to make a statement that we all in one way or the other have mental health issues. It could be as a result of stress from work, emotional instabilities etc. so abandoning them is abandoning humanity,” she added.

The group changed the entire roof of the Male Infirmary from asbestos to aluminium, fixed and replaced wooden ceiling, redesigned the entrance doors and locks and restructured the washroom and bathhouse for both staff and patients.

The NSP also replaced old and broken water closets, redesigned of nurses changing rooms, total changeover of wire mesh and nets for the entire structure, replacement of broken windows, ceiling fans and electric bulbs.

They provided proper water supply through newly fixed pipes to the washrooms, bathhouse and kitchen sink and they also painted and tiled of the entire ward.

The Accra Psychiatric Hospital also benefitted from four new beds, swivel chairs, writing desks and a cabinet.

On his part, patron of the group, Samuel Kwame Boafo, who is also the Head of Human Resources at CalBank, commended the group for their commitment to achieving their dream.

He thanked the NSP for buying into the bank’s culture of giving back to society and while charging the administrators of the Hospital to take good care of the facility.

Mr Kwame Boafo also thanked Virtual Security Africa (VSA) for financially supporting the CalBank 2018/19 National Service Personnel to realise their dream.

The elated Deputy Director of the Hospital, Julius Kuusaalesuo, said APH least expected the group to go as far as give the facility a makeover.

He promised that they will take good care of the facility and urged philanthropists, organisations, groups and kind-hearted individuals to follow the lead of the NSP and support the Hospital.
